Tournament Gives $500,000 In 5 Years |
| September 23, 2008 |
When Tred Barta christened his tournament in Beaufort in 2004, he made a simple, yet pivotal statement, "We’re going to raise 1-Million dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina!" While anglers are known for their ability to embellish the truth with what was caught, Barta has placed over $500K on the docks in Beaufort to back up his goal of catching the million dollar gift. "This was a very aggressive goal for a new tournament on the block and I am very proud to say we are on schedule for meeting this goal so far," says Barta about the progress of the tournament thus far. "To be half-way on the journey of reaching $1M for the Boys & Girls Club of Coastal Carolina, in ten years, is incredible," Barta added.
The Barta Tournament participates in the NC Governor?s Cup Billfish Series and this year become the second largest tournament within the series, behind the iconic Big Rock in neighboring Morehead City. Each of the tournaments in the Governors Cup is different, the Barta tournament is the only one that requires all billfish to be released. The tournament also distributes only trophies to the winners, no money and has an honor system scoring, something Barta stands firmly behind. "We are a tournament of morals and we?ll always be a tournament of morals," said Barta. During this year?s tournament, anglers recorded a release of 28 billfish, with most by anglers 16-years and younger. While it would be convenient for the tournament to maintain a consistent venue from year to year, those involved in the tournament have already begun to make changes for next year in an attempt to best accomplish Barta?s goal of fundraising for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina. "We are very proud of what this tournament stands for and the impact we can make on the children who need us most in both Carteret & Craven Counties", said Cynthia Barber the tournament director since its inception.
To maintain a pace of charitable giving, tournament organizers understand they must maintain a product that is fresh, and creates an atmosphere where anglers understand that their purpose in Beaufort each year is to give to have fun and raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs. This is a tournament where morals, honesty and philanthropy are the pillars of its foundation. Where the Boys and Girls Clubs give a community hope in its youth?s future, the Barta gives financial hope to the Boys and Girls Clubs.
